LJL- M2M

Introduction

M2M or mundane to magnificent. This project helped us to understand different materials through a basic material called paper. In this project we were basically asked to explore and experiment with different kinds of paper like ivory sheets, glace paper, crepe paper, rice paper, butter paper, OHP sheet, newspaper and sunboard. In this project, I realized that different types of paper can have different textures, smell and properties after burning, folding, Soaking and cutting. According to me, the main aim of this project was that we get familiar with adhesives like fevibond and feviquick and to learn how to use blades in a proper way.

Paper manipulation

For the first week of this project, we were experimenting and manipulating different papers. We learnt about weaving, jaali work, half cut of a paper and 3d formation. In 3d formation we learnt to make cube, cuboid, cylinders, cone and etc.

DOs and DON'Ts while using Adhesives

During the process of final submission, I used adhesives like fevibond and feviquick to paste sunboards with each other, and there were some things which I realized while working with fevibond

  • DO Be patient while using adhesive specially with feviquick as it is quite warm and can leave the skin dry and itchy.

  • DON'T use fevicol in OHP sheets as it can be quite messy.

  • DO use fevicol during making of a form as it dries slowly and can be helpful if need improvement in work.

  • DO be aware of the strong smell of adhesive specially fevibond.

  • DO close the lid after using adhesives, as it can dry it out.

  • DO apply a thin layer of fevibond on both the surface of sunboards for better results.

Final Outcome

For final submission for this project was to make a cube from a sunboard with the measurements of 25cm, and use our explorations of paper done during first week of the project and make it look aesthetic.

Quilling

a type of ornamental craftwork involving the shaping of paper into pleats or folds. Even though quilling is quite popular and well practiced art, this was my first time during this project.

Jaali work

Jaali work consist of making aesthetic designs using cutter. In my work, I also included half cut on my sheet.

Crepe paper

As you can see in this picture, I tried to make a flower using crepe paper of two different colors. From crepe paper, I first made sensu( fan made from folding paper in japan). I used to make this type of a fan when I was a kid but never tried it to make it from different kind of paper and never tried to join five or six fans together.

Weaving

The craft or action of forming fabric or paper by interlacing threads.

OHP sheet

OHP sheet is a transparent sheet. For this side of the cube, I first cut and pasted strips of a normal pink color sheet, behind that I used OHP sheet.

CONCLUSION

  • During this project I learnt many new techniques like half cut, carving, perforation, jaali work and many more, which helped my learning in transform more diverse and interesting.

  • This project helped me to realize the different textures and properties of different papers and got a chance to work with the new and different kinds of paper like OHP sheet, crepe paper, sunboard.

  • Working with Adhesives like fevibond for the first time was quite frustrating as the smell of fevibond is quite strong.

Muddiest point- The edges of cube I made weren't that smooth. I wasn't able to bring neatness in the edges of the cube.

Clearest point-Using different techniques on different textures of paper like half cut, jaali work, weaving etc., was quite fun and interesting for me.

This Project changed my perspective for paper. After this project, Whenever I see an ordinary paper, all I can think is how can I manipulate it to make it look more aesthetic. For my future transform classes, I am eager to learn about more ways to make something ordinary into magnificent.
