INTRODUCTION
EOC-2 or essence of culture was about different culture and communities we belong in. Culture is about how we do things, why we do things in a certain way and the values we share in common with other people from our community. The main aim for this project was to understand the aspects of culture and communities and understanding its material and non-material components.
Starting with essence of culture, we were told to research about a culture which is celebrated in our family for years and why are certain rituals performed. I took the Lohri culture, as it is celebrated from a very long time in our family. In this task we learnt about material and non-material for the cultures. Material means things used during the particular culture like food and clothes, meanwhile Non-material means beliefs, norms, values or myths used to celebrate a particular culture.
Tools of inquiry we used during this project
Semi structured interview
Semi structured interview includes open minded questions which are quite flexible. It a type of interview in which the interviewer asks only a few predetermined questions while the rest of the questions are not planned in advance. For this home-task I took footwear as my functional object and interviewed my father. This type of interview helps interviewer to ask questions spontaneously, But I felt stuck in between the interview, so I guess it could have been better. Apart from this, in semi structured interview I wasn't able to ask valuable questions and it requires substantial resources.
5W1H
5W1H is an acronym in which every letter corresponds to a question: what, who, where, when, how and why. This technique allows you to understand a situation by exploring all the aspects.
For this method of interview, I interviewed my father. This method was really helpful for me as it helped in differentiating types of footwear between me and my father. This method helped me to ask the right questions, expand enquiry and obtain the right and valuable information. This method also helped to gather all the factual elements needed for a complete and objective understanding.
CONCLUSION
The most challenging part in EOC2 was collecting information for our tribe Bali Aga, as there were not much sources available in secondary sources. Because of this we weren't able to complete our group presentation and it got delayed.
The most fun part in EOC2 for me was to collect information about our respective communities, in which mine was Lohri. I really enjoyed to learn more about this culture which is celebrated in my family for a very long time.
The clearest point of EOC2 will be differentiating between material and non-material in our respective communities and to know what important role culture and communities play in our lives. Being a part of a community can make us feel as though we are a part of something greater than ourselves.
The muddiest point of EOC2 was searching for secondary information for our tribe 'Bali Aga' as it was really time consuming for my group and because of this our presentation got delayed. But research on Bali Aga helped us to realize that these communities are very close to environment. Apart from this, I felt stuck while taking a Semi structured interview for my functional object. I felt that I could have done better in that.
